Celebrating the life of
Judith Young Philipp
November 29, 1943 - July 30, 2006
JUDITH CLAIR PHILIPP
Judith Clair Philipp died Sunday, July 30, 2006 after a brief illness. Mrs. Philipp, the daughter of Dorothy Virginia Orr and Oliver Frances Young, was born November 29, 1943 in Savannah, Georgia.
She attended Savannah High School and was graduated from Armstrong State College as a Bachelor of Arts with a major in music.
As a member of Chatham County 4-H clubs, she won awards at the local and district level. While employed at Hunter Army Airfield, Cobra Hall, she was chosen Employee of the Week. She attended Independent Presbyterian Church from childhood and was a member there for many years, singing with the choir during much of that time. She also sang with the Savannah Symphony Chorale.
As a volunteer with the Savannah Symphony Concert Artist Series she served as host for many featured artists, helping them feel comfortable and enjoy Savannah. When Skitch Henderson returned for performances, he requested her as his aide. Once when a piano was delayed in transit and the only comparable concert grand piano available for practice was hers, she enjoyed private concerts for a week while the artist practiced.
Passionate about music, she taught piano and voice and adored her students. She was intent that each should have the opportunity to learn to love and appreciate music. She often played at weddings, filled in as pianist for local churches, had occasionally played at Anna’s Little Napoli and composed beautiful, classical music to share with family and friends.
A lifelong lover of animals, she was a staunch advocate of caring and humane treatment for them and possessed an astonishing talent in rehabilitative care of domestic and wild animals alike. Even the local birds knew when it was “mealtime” at her house, lighting on the roof while treats were thrown up to them!
There were often new additions to her pet roster as neighbors had discovered a stray animal would fine a loving home if it were left on her doorstep. Some were even left with a bowl of milk or food to encourage them wait until found!
She inherited her mother’s love of flowers and delighted in a lovely, well-tended garden, spending hours happily planting and landscaping.
She is survived by her sister and brother in law, Mr. & Mrs. Gerald T. Edenfield Virginia Young, a sister in law, Pamela Philipp Limehouse, a sister in law and brother in law, Mr. & Mrs. Norman Axnick Carol, five nieces and a nephew and their spouses, Dorothy Cook Plogger, Mr. & Mrs. Michael D. Magill Angelia Cook, Kelly L. Limehouse, Mr. & Mrs Bobby R. Patton Jacquelyn Cook, Kristen H. Castilian and Mr. & Mrs. Ron Axnick; twelve great nieces and nephews, Christopher, Kelli and Kimberly Plogger, Catlin and Kendall Farnsworth, Margaret Magill, Katheryn Burkett, Robby Gaines, Bobby and Brandon Patton and Jordan and Shelbie Axnick.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 2, 2006 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 7 p.m. at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel.
